Authenticated Path Traversal and Arbitrary File Upload RCE in Kentico Xperience Staging Sync Server

IdentifiersCVE-2025-2749CWE-22· Improper Limitation of a Pathname…

CVE-2025-2749 is an authenticated remote code execution vulnerability in Kentico Xperience caused by improper restriction of file paths in the Staging Sync Server upload functionality. Authenticated users can upload arbitrary data to attacker-controlled path-relative locations, enabling path traversal outside the intended directory. Because the flaw also permits arbitrary file upload, an attacker can place files in locations where the web server or application will process them. If the uploaded content is server-executable, this can lead to remote code execution. The issue affects Kentico Xperience through version 13.0.178.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows an authenticated attacker to write arbitrary files to unintended locations on the target system. This can result in server-side code execution, compromise of the CMS instance, modification or replacement of application files, persistence via web shells or other malicious components, and potential follow-on access to sensitive data or adjacent systems reachable from the compromised host.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, restrict or disable access to the Staging Sync Server, especially from untrusted networks, and limit its use to only required administrative paths and trusted source IPs. Minimize the privileges of accounts permitted to use staging synchronization. Prevent execution of uploaded content in writable directories, enforce strict allowlists for upload paths and file types where possible, and monitor for traversal patterns and unexpected file creation under web-accessible or application directories.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Kentico Xperience to a fixed version later than 13.0.178 if available from the vendor. Apply the vendor's security update addressing CVE-2025-2749 and validate that the Staging Sync Server no longer accepts path-relative traversal sequences or arbitrary upload destinations. Review the application and web root for unauthorized uploaded files, especially executable content, and remove any malicious artifacts. Rotate credentials and secrets that may have been exposed if compromise is suspected.
