Out-of-bounds Read in libgit2 git_delta_apply (CVE-2018-10888)

IdentifiersCVE-2018-10888CWE-125· Out-of-bounds Read

CVE-2018-10888 is a vulnerability in libgit2 before version 0.27.3, where the git_delta_apply function in delta.c fails to properly check bounds when reading a binary delta file. This missing check can result in an out-of-bounds read, potentially allowing an attacker to trigger a denial of service by supplying a crafted binary delta file.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows an attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) in applications using vulnerable versions of libgit2 by providing a specially crafted binary delta file that triggers an out-of-bounds read in the git_delta_apply function.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict the processing of untrusted or unauthenticated binary delta files and ensure that only trusted sources are allowed to provide input to libgit2 operations.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade libgit2 to version 0.27.3 or later, where the bounds check in git_delta_apply has been properly implemented to prevent out-of-bounds reads.
