Heap Out-of-Bounds Write in Exynos Baseband

IdentifiersCVE-2023-21517CWE-122

CVE-2023-21517 is a heap out-of-bounds write vulnerability in Samsung Exynos baseband firmware prior to the SMR Jun-2023 Release 1. The flaw allows a remote attacker to write data outside the bounds of a heap buffer, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution within the baseband processor. The vulnerability is exploitable remotely, likely via crafted radio-layer messages.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the baseband processor, potentially compromising device integrity, confidentiality, and availability. This could enable further attacks such as eavesdropping, device control, or lateral movement to the application processor.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until the firmware can be updated, users should minimize exposure to untrusted cellular networks and consider disabling cellular connectivity where feasible. Network-level mitigations by carriers may also reduce risk, but patching is the only reliable solution.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade the Exynos baseband firmware to the version provided in the SMR Jun-2023 Release 1 or later, which addresses this vulnerability.
