Improper Bucket Access in IBM Spectrum Fusion HCI RGW for Ceph

IdentifiersCVE-2023-43040CWE-284

IBM Spectrum Fusion HCI versions 2.5.2 through 2.7.2 contain a vulnerability in the RGW (RADOS Gateway) component for Ceph, where improper bucket access controls could allow an attacker to perform unauthorized actions. The vulnerability arises from insufficient enforcement of access permissions on storage buckets, potentially enabling unauthorized users to access or manipulate data.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

An attacker exploiting this vulnerability could perform unauthorized actions on storage buckets, such as reading, modifying, or deleting data, which could lead to data breaches, loss of integrity, or denial of service within the affected IBM Spectrum Fusion HCI environments.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

As a temporary mitigation, restrict network access to the RGW service, enforce strict authentication and authorization policies, and monitor access logs for suspicious activity until the system can be patched.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade IBM Spectrum Fusion HCI to a version later than 2.7.2 where this vulnerability has been addressed. IBM has released patches to correct the improper bucket access controls in RGW for Ceph.
