XXE in Ambari/Oozie XML Parsing

IdentifiersCVE-2025-23195CWE-611· Improper Restriction of XML…

CVE-2025-23195 is an XML External Entity (XXE) vulnerability in the Ambari/Oozie project. The vulnerability arises from insecure XML parsing using the DocumentBuilderFactory class, where external entity resolution is not disabled. This allows attackers to inject malicious XML entities, potentially leading to the disclosure of arbitrary files on the server or enabling server-side request forgery (SSRF) attacks. The vulnerability is present in versions prior to Ambari 2.7.9 and the trunk branch before the fix.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows attackers to read arbitrary files from the server filesystem or perform SSRF attacks, which can be leveraged to access internal resources or sensitive data.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

As an interim mitigation, configure the XML parser (DocumentBuilderFactory) to disable external entity resolution by setting the appropriate features (e.g., setFeature("http://apache.org/xml/features/disallow-doctype-decl", true)). Restrict network access to the vulnerable service to trusted sources only until the patch can be applied.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade to Ambari version 2.7.9 or later, or ensure the trunk branch includes the fix. The patch disables external entity resolution in the XML parser, mitigating the XXE vulnerability.
