Unquoted Service Path in I-O DATA NAS Management Applications

IdentifiersCVE-2025-61865CWE-428· Unquoted Search Path or Element

Multiple NAS management applications provided by I-O DATA DEVICE, INC. register Windows services using unquoted executable paths. If the service binary path contains spaces and is not enclosed in quotation marks, Windows may incorrectly resolve the path during service startup and attempt to execute a malicious executable placed in a higher-priority path segment. According to the provided description, a user with write permission to the root directory of the system drive can exploit this condition to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows arbitrary code execution in the context of the Windows Service Control Manager-launched service, resulting in SYSTEM-level privilege escalation. An attacker who already has the ability to write to the root of the system drive can plant a crafted executable at a path that Windows will resolve first, causing it to be launched instead of the intended service binary.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Restrict write permissions on the root of the system drive to trusted administrators only. Audit Windows services for unquoted paths with spaces and remediate misconfigurations. Use application control or allowlisting to prevent execution of unauthorized binaries from the system drive root and other writable directories. Monitor for suspicious executable creation such as files named to match truncated service path parsing behavior and for unexpected service-start child processes running as SYSTEM.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Update the affected I-O DATA DEVICE, INC. NAS management applications to a vendor-fixed version that registers service executable paths with proper quotation marks. Review all installed related services and correct any unquoted ImagePath entries that reference paths containing spaces. After remediation, verify service configurations in the registry and through the Service Control Manager to ensure executable paths are fully quoted.
