Integer Overflow in Apple Web Content Processing

IdentifiersCVE-2024-44198CWE-190· Integer Overflow or Wraparound

CVE-2024-44198 is an integer overflow vulnerability in Apple’s web content processing components. Apple states that processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to an unexpected process crash, and that the issue was addressed through improved input validation. The vulnerability affects Apple platforms including visionOS, watchOS, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and tvOS prior to the fixed releases. Based on the advisory, the flaw is triggered during handling of attacker-controlled web content and results in a crash of the affected process rather than code execution in the available documentation.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation can cause an unexpected crash of the targeted web content processing process, resulting in denial of service for the affected application or component. The provided advisory does not state that the issue enables code execution, sandbox escape, or data disclosure.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until patches are applied, reduce exposure to untrusted or attacker-controlled web content where feasible. Because the issue is triggered by maliciously crafted web content, limiting browsing to trusted sites and restricting web content rendering in exposed workflows may reduce risk, but vendor patching is the primary mitigation described by the available information.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply Apple’s security updates that fix CVE-2024-44198. Apple indicates the issue is fixed in visionOS 2, watchOS 11, macOS Sequoia 15, iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and tvOS 18.
