Command Injection in D-Link DIR-816 /goform/SystemCommand

IdentifiersCVE-2022-37129CWE-78· Improper Neutralization of Special…

CVE-2022-37129 is a command injection vulnerability in D-Link DIR-816 firmware A2_v1.10CNB04.img. The vulnerable endpoint is /goform/SystemCommand. According to the provided content, attacker-supplied input from the command parameter is incorporated into an internal buffer (byte_4836B0) via snprintf and then passed to doSystem(&byte_4836B0) for execution. Because the command parameter is insufficiently sanitized before being used in an OS command context, an attacker can inject arbitrary shell commands.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows arbitrary command execution on the affected device in the context of the vulnerable web service/process. This can enable full compromise of the router, including modification of device configuration, execution of follow-on payloads, botnet enrollment, persistence, traffic manipulation, and potential use of the device as a pivot point into adjacent networks.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Restrict access to the router management interface, especially any internet exposure to the web administration service and the /goform/SystemCommand endpoint. Limit administration to trusted internal hosts or a dedicated management network, enforce strong authentication, disable remote administration if not required, and use network segmentation and ACLs to prevent untrusted access. Monitor for suspicious requests targeting /goform/SystemCommand and for unexpected process execution or configuration changes on the device.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade the affected D-Link DIR-816 firmware to a vendor-fixed version if one is available. If no patched firmware is available, replace the device with a supported model receiving security updates. Review vendor advisories and firmware release notes for fixes specific to CVE-2022-37129. After remediation, rotate administrative credentials, review configuration integrity, and inspect the device for signs of compromise.
