Sandbox escape via Skia integer overflow in Google Chrome (pre-112.0.5615.137)

IdentifiersCVE-2023-2136CWE-190· Integer Overflow or Wraparound

CVE-2023-2136 is an integer overflow vulnerability in Skia as used by Google Chrome prior to 112.0.5615.137. The issue can be triggered via a crafted HTML page and, in the described attack scenario, can be leveraged by an attacker who has already compromised the Chrome renderer process to potentially escape the browser sandbox (Chromium severity: High).

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Potential sandbox escape from a compromised renderer process in affected Chrome versions, enabling an attacker to break out of the renderer sandbox boundary and increase the impact of an initial renderer compromise.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

No specific mitigations are provided in the supplied content beyond applying the vendor patch (upgrading to a fixed Chrome/Chromium build).

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Google Chrome to version 112.0.5615.137 or later (and equivalent Chromium-based downstream builds incorporating the fix).
