Argo CD Project Details API Repository Credential Exposure

IdentifiersCVE-2025-55190CWE-200· Exposure of Sensitive Information…

CVE-2025-55190 is an information disclosure vulnerability in Argo CD caused by insufficient access control enforcement in the project details API endpoint, /api/v1/projects/{project}/detailed. In affected versions, API tokens with project-level permissions, including tokens that only have projects, get access or standard application-management permissions, can retrieve sensitive repository credentials associated with the project. The exposed data includes repository usernames and passwords used to access private Git and related repositories. The flaw stems from the endpoint returning credential material in its response without properly restricting or filtering it based on the caller’s effective authorization.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows a low-privileged but valid Argo CD API token holder to obtain repository credentials that should be restricted. This can expose private source code and deployment manifests, enable unauthorized access to Git or Helm repositories, and create downstream risk of supply-chain compromise, malicious deployment modification, privilege escalation within the delivery environment, and potential compromise of CI/CD workflows or Kubernetes environments managed through Argo CD.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, restrict or disable API tokens that have project-level get permissions, especially broadly scoped global permissions such as p, role/user, projects, get, *, allow. Limit access to the /api/v1/projects/{project}/detailed endpoint where feasible, audit token issuance and RBAC mappings, monitor for suspicious access to project detail APIs, and proactively rotate repository credentials that may have been disclosed.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Argo CD to a fixed version appropriate for the deployed branch: 2.13.9, 2.14.16, 3.0.14, or 3.1.2. After patching, rotate any repository credentials that may have been exposed, including usernames/passwords or tokens used for private repositories. Review Argo CD RBAC assignments and reduce unnecessary grants of projects, get or equivalent project-read permissions.
