Buffer Overflow in XProtect Device Pack Camera Drivers

IdentifiersCVE-2024-3506CWE-120· Buffer Copy without Checking Size…

A buffer overflow vulnerability exists in certain camera drivers included with the XProtect Device Pack. An attacker with access to the internal network can exploit this flaw to execute arbitrary commands on the Recording Server, but only under strict conditions. The vulnerability is due to improper bounds checking in the affected drivers, leading to a possible buffer overflow.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the Recording Server, potentially leading to full system compromise, lateral movement, or disruption of video surveillance operations. The attack requires access to the internal network and is limited by specific conditions in the environment.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Restrict access to the internal network, segment the network to limit exposure of the Recording Server, and monitor for unusual activity. Apply least privilege principles and consider disabling or removing unused camera drivers until patches are applied.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Update to the latest version of the XProtect Device Pack where the vulnerable camera drivers have been patched. Ensure all relevant software components are up to date as provided by the vendor.
