Improper Verification of Cryptographic Signature in Data Center Expert

IdentifiersCVE-2024-8531CWE-347· Improper Verification of…

CVE-2024-8531 is an Improper Verification of Cryptographic Signature (CWE-347) vulnerability in Data Center Expert software. The vulnerability allows an attacker to manipulate an upgrade bundle to include arbitrary bash scripts, which are then executed as root during the upgrade process. This occurs due to insufficient verification of the cryptographic signature on upgrade bundles, enabling execution of malicious code with elevated privileges.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code as root on the affected system, leading to full system compromise, privilege escalation, and potential lateral movement within the environment.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until a patch is applied, restrict access to the upgrade process to trusted administrators, monitor for unauthorized upgrade attempts, and validate the integrity of upgrade bundles before use.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply the vendor-provided patch or update that properly verifies cryptographic signatures on upgrade bundles before execution. Ensure only trusted upgrade bundles are used and that signature verification is enforced.
