Local Privilege Escalation in AWS Client VPN for macOS Log Rotation

IdentifiersCVE-2025-11462CWE-59· Improper Link Resolution Before…

CVE-2025-11462 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability affecting AWS Client VPN Client for macOS versions 1.3.2 through 5.2.0. The flaw is caused by improper link resolution and insufficient validation of the log destination directory during log rotation. A local non-administrative user can create a symbolic link from a VPN client log file to a privileged file or location, such as /etc/crontab. By issuing crafted API calls that cause attacker-controlled content to be written into the client log, and then triggering log rotation, the application may follow the symlink and write that content into the privileged target while operating with elevated privileges. This can result in arbitrary code execution as root.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows a local unprivileged user on an affected macOS system to escalate privileges to root. Because the vulnerable client performs log handling with elevated privileges, attacker-controlled log content can be redirected into privileged files. If a target such as /etc/crontab is used, the injected content may be executed by the system, resulting in full root-level code execution and complete compromise of the host.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

No vendor workaround is provided. Until patching is completed, reduce exposure by restricting local unprivileged access to affected macOS endpoints, monitoring VPN client log paths for symlink creation or tampering, and watching for unexpected modification of privileged files such as /etc/crontab associated with AWS Client VPN log rotation activity.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade AWS Client VPN Client for macOS to version 5.2.1 or later. AWS states that version 5.2.1 adds stricter validation checks on the log destination directory during log rotation and ensures log files are written only to authorized directories.
