iOS/iPadOS lock screen contacts disclosure (CVE-2024-44180)

IdentifiersCVE-2024-44180CWE-200· Exposure of Sensitive Information…

CVE-2024-44180 is an iOS/iPadOS lock screen privacy issue fixed in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. Due to insufficient checks in lock-screen handling, an attacker with physical access to a locked device may be able to access the user’s contacts from the lock screen. Apple addressed the issue with improved checks.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

An attacker with physical access to a locked iPhone/iPad could obtain contact information without authenticating, resulting in unauthorized disclosure of sensitive personal data (contacts/address book) from the lock screen.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate upgrading is not possible, reduce lock-screen data exposure by restricting lock-screen features that can surface contact information (e.g., disable lock-screen access to relevant apps/features and tighten lock-screen privacy settings) and maintain strong physical security controls to prevent unauthorized physical access to locked devices.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade to iOS 18 / iPadOS 18 or later where Apple has implemented improved checks to prevent lock-screen access to contacts.
