Out-of-Bounds Write RCE in Adobe Acrobat and Reader 3D PDF Rendering

IdentifiersCVE-2019-7119CWE-787· Out-of-bounds Write

CVE-2019-7119 is a critical out-of-bounds write vulnerability in Adobe Acrobat and Reader affecting versions 2019.010.20098 and earlier, 2017.011.30127 and earlier, and 2015.006.30482 and earlier. The flaw is in the 3D rendering path used for embedded PDF 3D content, specifically the 2d.x3d module and related rt3d processing associated with ECMA-363 Universal 3D File Format (U3D) resources. Available analysis indicates the root cause is an out-of-bounds write in TRGB::Read(), with crash evidence at 2d!png_set_filter_heuristics during handling of crafted texture/image data, including external image references. A malicious PDF containing crafted U3D texture resources can trigger an arbitrary write when 3D content is rendered, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation can result in arbitrary code execution in the context of the logged-on user. The observed arbitrary write occurs in the sandboxed Adobe Reader process, but code execution within that context can still enable attacker-controlled execution, access to user-available data, and follow-on exploitation depending on sandbox escape opportunities or product configuration.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Apply Adobe security updates as the primary mitigation. Where immediate patching is not possible, reduce exposure by disabling or restricting 3D content rendering in PDF workflows, especially in environments that exchange 3D PDFs. Limit opening of untrusted PDF documents and enforce protected-view/sandboxing controls where available. Organizations in CAD or other sectors that routinely use 3D PDFs should prioritize patch deployment because they may have 3D content enabled by default.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Adobe Acrobat/Reader to a fixed release identified by Adobe in APSB19-17. Fixed versions include Acrobat/Reader DC Continuous 2019.010.20099, Acrobat/Reader 2017 Classic 2017.011.30138, and Acrobat/Reader DC Classic 2015.006.30493 for Windows and macOS. Use the built-in updater or deploy vendor-provided updated packages through enterprise software distribution mechanisms.
