OS Command Injection in Dell Unity svc_nfssupport

IdentifiersCVE-2025-36606CWE-78· Improper Neutralization of Special…

CVE-2025-36606 is an OS command injection vulnerability in the svc_nfssupport utility of Dell Unity Operating Environment (OE). Dell Unity OE version 5.5 and prior are affected, including impacted Dell Unity, Dell EMC Unity All Flash, Dell EMC Unity Hybrid, and related UnityVSA/Unity XT deployments running vulnerable OE versions. The flaw is caused by improper neutralization of special elements in user-supplied input before that input is passed to a shell for execution. An authenticated attacker can provide crafted input to svc_nfssupport, escape the restricted shell environment, and cause arbitrary operating system commands to be executed with root privileges.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation results in arbitrary OS command execution as root on the affected Dell Unity system. Because the vulnerability enables escape from the restricted shell, an attacker can fully bypass intended command restrictions and potentially achieve complete compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability on the storage appliance, including administrative control over the underlying operating environment.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

No specific alternative mitigation was provided in the available content beyond applying the vendor fix. Where immediate upgrade is not possible, reducing access to local authenticated shell-capable interfaces and tightly restricting which users can access affected utilities may reduce exposure, but the available information does not document an official vendor workaround.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade affected systems to Dell Unity Operating Environment version 5.5.1 or later. Dell states that Unity OE 5.5.1 and newer address CVE-2025-36606. Organizations should apply the vendor-provided update across affected Dell Unity, UnityVSA, and Unity XT systems and obtain the fixed software from Dell's official support channels and associated security advisory guidance.
