ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows a local attacker to gain elevated privileges, potentially leading to full system compromise. This could be leveraged to execute arbitrary code in the context of the SYSTEM account, install programs, view/change/delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, restrict local access to systems where feasible, and follow the principle of least privilege to limit the impact of potential exploitation. Monitor for abnormal activity that could indicate privilege escalation attempts.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply the security updates provided by Microsoft as part of the February 2020 Patch Tuesday release. Ensure all affected Windows systems are updated to the latest patch level to address this vulnerability.
