Missing Authentication for Logcaptures Archive Access

IdentifiersCVE-2024-8530CWE-306· Missing Authentication for…

CVE-2024-8530 is a missing authentication vulnerability (CWE-306) where a critical function—access to an already generated 'logcaptures' archive—can be accessed directly via HTTPS without authentication. This allows unauthorized users to retrieve sensitive log data if they know or can guess the archive's location or URL.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

An attacker with network access to the affected system can directly access and download the 'logcaptures' archive, potentially exposing sensitive or private data contained within the logs. This could lead to information disclosure, aiding further attacks or compromising user privacy.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Restrict network access to the affected system to trusted users only, and monitor access logs for unauthorized attempts to retrieve the 'logcaptures' archive. Consider removing or disabling the archive feature if not required until a patch is available.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Implement proper authentication and authorization checks for all access to the 'logcaptures' archive, ensuring only authorized users can retrieve the archive via HTTPS. Review and update access controls for all sensitive endpoints.
