Default credentials command execution in Schneider Electric EcoStruxure WebHMI

IdentifiersCVE-2025-1960CWE-1188· Initialization of a Resource with…

A CWE-1188 (Initialization of a Resource with an Insecure Default) issue in Schneider Electric EcoStruxure WebHMI where systems may ship/use insecure default password credentials that, if not changed on first use, can allow an attacker to execute unauthorized commands. The content also notes the default username is not displayed correctly in the WebHMI interface, which may contribute to insecure credential handling.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

If default credentials remain unchanged, an attacker can authenticate using those defaults and execute unauthorized commands, potentially leading to compromise of the WebHMI host and downstream operational impact in environments where WebHMI is used to monitor/control industrial processes.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Ensure WebHMI is not exposed to the public internet; restrict access via network segmentation and allowlisting to trusted management networks only. Enforce strong authentication controls (unique passwords, MFA where supported) and monitor for authentication using default/known credentials and suspicious command execution activity.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Change the system’s default password credentials on first use (and ensure unique, strong credentials are enforced). Apply vendor-provided updates/fixes for CVE-2025-1960 when available, particularly if they address the insecure default credential state and/or the WebHMI default-username display issue.
