iOS/iPadOS/macOS Print Preview Temporary File Plaintext Disclosure

IdentifiersCVE-2024-40826CWE-200

Apple iOS/iPadOS/macOS contained a privacy issue in file handling where, when a user uses print preview, an unencrypted version of a document could be written to a temporary file. This could result in unintended exposure of document contents via the temporary file on the local system. Apple states the issue was addressed with improved handling of files and is fixed in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia 15.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Local disclosure of sensitive information: document contents may be exposed in plaintext via a temporary file created during print preview, potentially allowing another local process/user with access to the temporary file location to recover the document data.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

No specific mitigations are provided in the source content beyond applying the vendor update. As a general operational mitigation, restrict local access to devices and ensure appropriate protections around temporary directories, but the definitive mitigation is patching.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade to versions containing the fix: iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia 15 (or later).
