Stored XSS in Static Web Server (SWS) Directory Listings

IdentifiersCVE-2024-32966CWE-79· Improper Neutralization of Input…

CVE-2024-32966 is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Static Web Server (SWS). When directory listings are enabled and untrusted users have upload privileges, they can upload files with maliciously crafted names (e.g., containing HTML/JavaScript payloads). SWS does not escape HTML entities in directory listings, allowing execution of arbitrary JavaScript in the context of the web server's domain when a victim views the listing.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary JavaScript in the browser of any user who views the affected directory listing. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or further attacks within the context of the web server's domain.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate upgrade is not possible, disable directory listings or restrict upload privileges to trusted users only. However, the only complete mitigation is to upgrade to a fixed version.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade to a patched version of Static Web Server (SWS) that properly escapes HTML entities in directory listings. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.
