Skia integer overflow sandbox escape in Google Chrome

IdentifiersCVE-2023-6345CWE-190· Integer Overflow or Wraparound

CVE-2023-6345 is an integer overflow vulnerability in Skia, the graphics library used by Google Chrome. It affects Google Chrome prior to 119.0.6045.199. According to the provided content, the flaw could be triggered via a malicious file and, if the attacker had already compromised the renderer process, could be used to potentially escape Chrome's sandbox. The supporting context indicates this class of Skia issue can involve malformed graphics data causing size or buffer calculations to overflow, which can in turn lead to memory corruption during graphics processing.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation could allow an attacker who already has code execution in the compromised Chrome renderer process to break out of the renderer sandbox. This would enable execution or actions beyond the renderer's normal isolation boundaries, materially increasing attacker privileges within the browser or host context and facilitating follow-on compromise.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until patching is completed, reduce exposure to untrusted files and content that may invoke Skia parsing or rendering paths, and use Chrome's latest stable build with all automatic updates enabled. Standard hardening measures such as minimizing renderer compromise opportunities and restricting delivery of untrusted files may reduce exploitability, but the primary mitigation is vendor patching.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Update Google Chrome to version 119.0.6045.199 or later, as the vulnerability affects versions prior to that release. Apply the corresponding Chromium/Chrome security updates across all supported platforms.
