Heap Buffer Overflow in Accusoft ImageGear pictwread

IdentifiersCVE-2023-35002CWE-122

A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the pictwread functionality of Accusoft ImageGear version 20.1. ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system, potentially leading to full compromise of the affected application and its data. The vulnerability can be triggered by convincing a user to open a malicious file with the vulnerable software.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Restrict access to the application to trusted users only, and avoid opening files from untrusted sources. Employ endpoint protection solutions that can detect and block exploitation attempts. Monitor for abnormal application behavior that may indicate exploitation.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade to a patched version of Accusoft ImageGear that addresses this vulnerability. If no patch is available, consider disabling the pictwread functionality or avoid opening untrusted files with the application.
