Cleartext Storage of Credentials in Mitsubishi Electric GX Works2

IdentifiersCVE-2025-3784CWE-312· Cleartext Storage of Sensitive…

CVE-2025-3784 is a vulnerability in all versions of Mitsubishi Electric GX Works2, an industrial control system software. The vulnerability arises from the cleartext storage of sensitive credential information within project files. An attacker with local access to these files can extract credential data stored in plaintext, bypass user authentication, and gain unauthorized access to project files. This could allow the attacker to obtain or modify project information, potentially impacting the integrity and confidentiality of industrial control system configurations.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows an attacker with local access to obtain credentials and bypass authentication mechanisms, leading to unauthorized access and potential modification of project files. This could compromise the integrity of industrial control systems managed by GX Works2, with possible downstream effects on critical manufacturing operations.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until a patch is released, organizations should implement network segmentation and restrict both network and physical access to systems running GX Works2. Use firewalls or VPNs to limit access, install antivirus software, and encrypt project files during transfer. Follow CISA's ICS cybersecurity best practices and perform regular risk assessments.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Mitsubishi Electric is developing a fixed version of GX Works2 to address this vulnerability. Organizations should monitor for vendor updates and apply the patch as soon as it becomes available.
