Use-After-Free in AzeoTech DAQFactory .ctl File Parsing

IdentifiersCVE-2025-66585CWE-416· Use After Free

CVE-2025-66585 is a use-after-free vulnerability in AzeoTech DAQFactory release 20.7 (Build 2555), and according to the broader advisory context, affects release 20.7 and prior. The flaw is triggered while DAQFactory parses a specially crafted .ctl file, leading to a stale pointer dereference after memory has been freed. This can corrupt process memory and destabilize the application. In the documented exploitation scenario, a malicious .ctl file is supplied to the target system and processed by DAQFactory, which may allow attacker-controlled code execution in the context of the current process.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation can cause memory corruption and application instability, including crashes. More seriously, the vulnerability may permit arbitrary code execution in the security context of the DAQFactory process. Based on the advisory context for this vulnerability set, exploitation may also contribute to information disclosure depending on runtime conditions, but the primary documented impact for this CVE is memory corruption with possible code execution.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until remediation is fully deployed, restrict access to .ctl files and only allow trusted, validated project/control files to be opened in DAQFactory. Use DAQFactory safe mode where applicable, apply document editing passwords as recommended in the advisory context, and limit local file-ingest paths. From the CISA guidance in the provided content, minimize network exposure of ICS systems, place control systems behind firewalls, isolate them from business networks, and secure remote access through VPNs and other hardened access controls.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade AzeoTech DAQFactory to version 21.1, which the advisory states addresses these vulnerabilities. In addition, organizations should avoid opening or parsing untrusted .ctl files on affected installations and replace or retire vulnerable release 20.7 (Build 2555) and prior where applicable.
