Host header injection in LDAP Tool Box Self Service Password 1.5.2 password reset token generation

IdentifiersCVE-2023-53958CWE-640· Weak Password Recovery Mechanism…

LDAP Tool Box Self Service Password 1.5.2 contains a password reset weakness where the application trusts/manipulates the HTTP Host header when generating password reset tokens/links. An attacker can submit crafted password reset requests with a malicious Host header such that the generated reset token (or reset link containing the token) is directed/sent to an attacker-controlled host, allowing the attacker to intercept the token and subsequently use it to reset the victim’s password and take over the account.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Remote, unauthenticated attackers can potentially achieve account takeover by obtaining password reset tokens generated for victim accounts. The primary impact is on confidentiality and integrity (unauthorized access and credential reset), with no direct availability impact indicated.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate upgrade is not possible: enforce Host header allowlisting at the reverse proxy/WAF, strip or normalize X-Forwarded-Host/Host from untrusted sources, and configure the application (or fronting proxy) to use a fixed external hostname for password reset links. Add compensating controls such as rate limiting and account lockout/throttling on password reset flows, and monitor for anomalous password reset activity.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade LDAP Tool Box Self Service Password to a version that fixes CVE-2023-53958 (i.e., a release newer than 1.5.2 that no longer trusts the client-supplied Host header for token/link generation). Ensure the application constructs reset URLs from a configured canonical base URL rather than request headers, and apply strict validation/sanitization of Host/X-Forwarded-Host inputs where applicable.
