Microsoft Excel Integer Underflow Remote Code Execution

IdentifiersCVE-2026-20957CWE-191· Integer Underflow (Wrap or…

CVE-2026-20957 is a Critical Microsoft Office Excel vulnerability caused by an integer underflow (wraparound) during processing of a specially crafted Excel file. The provided content further characterizes the flaw as an integer underflow leading to a heap-based buffer overflow in Excel parsing logic. Successful exploitation allows code execution in the security context of the logged-on user when the malicious workbook is opened. The Preview Pane is not identified as an attack vector for this vulnerability.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows an unauthorized attacker to execute arbitrary code locally in the context of the current logged-on user. Depending on that user’s privileges, this can enable full compromise of the affected workstation, including malware execution, data access, persistence, and follow-on lateral movement. If the user has elevated rights, impact can extend to broader system control.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until patches are fully deployed, reduce exposure to untrusted Excel files, especially those delivered via email, web downloads, or external sharing channels. Enforce protected document handling policies, block or sandbox suspicious Office attachments, and limit execution opportunities from user-writable locations. Because the Preview Pane is not a vector here, mitigation should focus on preventing users from opening malicious Excel workbooks and on minimizing user privileges to reduce post-exploitation impact.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply the Microsoft January 2026 security update that addresses CVE-2026-20957 in Microsoft Excel. Prioritize patching systems that handle untrusted Office documents or are exposed to phishing-driven document delivery. Ensure Office and Windows security updates are fully deployed through normal enterprise patch management processes.
