ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Arbitrary code execution in the victim’s VS Code user context. The reported execution primitive can also be used for local port scanning/enumeration and data exfiltration from the developer workstation (e.g., probing local services and exfiltrating accessible data to an attacker-controlled domain).

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Do not open/import untrusted Markdown files with Markdown Preview Enhanced; restrict use to trusted repositories/workspaces only. In higher-risk environments, disable/uninstall the extension and enforce extension allowlisting to prevent installation/use of vulnerable extensions.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Update Markdown Preview Enhanced to a release that fixes CVE-2025-65716 (the provided content references v0.8.18 as affected but does not specify a fixed version). If no patched version is available, disable or uninstall the extension.
