Heap Buffer Overflow in PDFium in Google Chrome

IdentifiersCVE-2026-2648CWE-122· Heap-based Buffer Overflow

CVE-2026-2648 is a high-severity heap buffer overflow in PDFium, Chrome’s default PDF rendering engine, affecting Google Chrome prior to 145.0.7632.109. The flaw can be triggered when a remote attacker causes the browser to process a crafted PDF file, resulting in an out-of-bounds memory write on the heap. The available reporting does not identify the specific vulnerable function, but the issue is characterized as a memory-handling flaw in PDFium that can corrupt heap memory during PDF parsing or rendering.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows a remote attacker to perform an out-of-bounds heap write in the browser process while Chrome handles a malicious PDF. This can lead to memory corruption, browser crashes, denial of service, and potentially arbitrary code execution in the browser context. Debian’s advisory for the broader Chromium update also notes possible outcomes including arbitrary code execution, denial of service, or information disclosure from the addressed vulnerabilities.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, reduce exposure to untrusted PDF content. Practical mitigations include restricting or disabling in-browser PDF handling where feasible, blocking or filtering untrusted PDF attachments and downloads at email and web gateways, and limiting Chrome’s ability to automatically open PDFs from untrusted sources. These are temporary risk-reduction measures and not substitutes for patching.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Google Chrome to version 145.0.7632.109 or later. For Debian Chromium, apply the vendor-provided fixed packages: 145.0.7632.109-1~deb12u3 for oldstable (bookworm) and 145.0.7632.109-1~deb13u3 for stable (trixie). Ensure the browser is relaunched after updating so the patched build is active.
