SEH Buffer Overflow in AIDA64 Extreme 5.99.4900

IdentifiersCVE-2019-25633CWE-787· Out-of-bounds Write

CVE-2019-25633 is a local code execution vulnerability in AIDA64 Extreme 5.99.4900. The flaw is described as a structured exception handling (SEH) buffer overflow reachable through the application's email preferences and report wizard interfaces. An attacker can supply crafted input to the Display name field and the Load from file parameter to corrupt memory and trigger the overflow. Successful exploitation enables execution of attacker-controlled shellcode within the context of the AIDA64 Extreme process.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the vulnerable AIDA64 Extreme application. Because the issue is a memory corruption flaw, exploitation can result in full compromise of the application's confidentiality, integrity, and availability within the current user context.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Restrict local access to systems running AIDA64 Extreme 5.99.4900, especially by untrusted users. Prevent use of the vulnerable email preferences and report wizard paths with untrusted input, and do not load externally supplied files or field values into the affected interfaces. Application allowlisting, endpoint exploit mitigations, and least-privilege execution can reduce exploitation risk until the software is updated or removed.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade from AIDA64 Extreme 5.99.4900 to a fixed version if one is available from the vendor. If no patched release is available, remove or replace the vulnerable version and avoid using the affected functionality. Validate against vendor advisories and references for the corrected build before redeployment.
