Sensitive user data access in Apple Accounts authorization handling

IdentifiersCVE-2026-28877CWE-863

CVE-2026-28877 is an authorization flaw in the Apple Accounts component. Apple states the issue was caused by improper state management and that it was addressed with improved state management. Successful exploitation may allow a local app to bypass intended authorization controls and access sensitive user data. Apple has not publicly disclosed the specific vulnerable function or code path.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

A malicious app may be able to access sensitive user data that should have been protected by the Accounts authorization model. The primary impact is confidentiality loss of user data exposed through the affected Accounts component.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, reduce exposure by limiting installation and execution of untrusted or unnecessary apps, enforcing application allowlisting or MDM controls where available, and minimizing sensitive account data exposure on affected devices until updates can be applied. No vendor-provided workaround is described in the supplied content.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply the vendor fixes provided by Apple. Apple states this issue is fixed in iOS 18.7.9 and iPadOS 18.7.9, iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4, macOS Sequoia 15.7.5, macOS Sonoma 14.8.5, macOS Tahoe 26.4, visionOS 26.4, and watchOS 26.4.
