SEH-based local code execution in PDF Explorer 1.5.66.2

IdentifiersCVE-2018-25217CWE-787· Out-of-bounds Write

CVE-2018-25217 is a structured exception handler (SEH) overwrite vulnerability in PDF Explorer 1.5.66.2. The flaw is triggered when the application processes attacker-controlled input in the Label field of the Custom fields settings dialog. According to the provided content, a maliciously crafted payload can cause a buffer overflow and overwrite SEH records, and exploitation may use an NSEH jump together with ROP gadget chains to redirect execution flow and achieve arbitrary code execution. The issue is local in attack vector and affects the vulnerable PDF Explorer version specified.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows a local attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the affected PDF Explorer process. Given the provided CVSS vectors and description, the impact includes high confidentiality, integrity, and availability consequences, meaning an attacker could run malicious code, access or alter data available to the user, and potentially crash or destabilize the application or host environment accessible from that security context.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until remediation is available, restrict local access to systems running PDF Explorer 1.5.66.2, prevent untrusted users from interacting with the application, and avoid entering or importing untrusted data into the Custom fields settings dialog, especially the Label field. Apply endpoint exploit mitigations where possible, including DEP/ASLR enforcement and application control, to make SEH/ROP-based exploitation more difficult. Monitor for crashes or abnormal behavior in PDF Explorer associated with malformed Custom fields input.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade from PDF Explorer 1.5.66.2 to a vendor-fixed version if one is available. If no patched release is available, discontinue use of the vulnerable version and replace it with a supported alternative. Validate whether the vendor RTT Software has issued an updated build addressing the SEH overwrite in the Custom fields Label field handling.
