Go crypto/x509 inefficient certificate policy validation DoS

IdentifiersCVE-2026-32281CWE-407

A denial-of-service vulnerability exists in Go's crypto/x509 certificate chain validation logic when processing certificate policies. Validation of otherwise trusted certificate chains becomes unexpectedly inefficient if certificates in the chain contain a very large number of policy mappings. The issue affects policy validation during chain verification for chains issued by a root CA present in VerifyOptions.Roots or in the system certificate pool. The flaw is in the efficiency of certificate policy processing rather than trust establishment itself, allowing excessive computation during x509 verification.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

An attacker able to supply or trigger validation of a specially crafted but otherwise trusted certificate chain containing excessive policy mappings can cause disproportionate CPU consumption during certificate verification, resulting in denial of service. The impact is limited to resource exhaustion during chain validation; the provided information does not indicate authentication bypass, trust bypass, or code execution.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until patched, reduce exposure by limiting acceptance and validation of attacker-influenced certificate chains, especially in workflows that process untrusted peer certificates at scale. Where operationally feasible, constrain trust stores to only necessary roots and avoid validating certificates from unnecessary or externally supplied PKI hierarchies. Monitor for abnormal CPU usage in services performing x509 validation. Specific vendor-recommended mitigations beyond upgrading were not provided in the available content.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade to a fixed Go release that includes the crypto/x509 correction for CVE-2026-32281. The provided context states the issue was addressed in Go 1.26.2 and Go 1.25.9 as part of the Go security releases.
