Windows TDI Translation Driver (tdx.sys) Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability

IdentifiersCVE-2026-27908CWE-416· Use After Free

CVE-2026-27908 is an Important local elevation-of-privilege vulnerability in the Windows TDI Translation Driver (tdx.sys). The flaw is a use-after-free condition in tdx.sys, classified as CWE-416. Microsoft states that an authorized attacker can exploit the issue locally to elevate privileges. Available reporting indicates exploitation requires winning a race condition, which is reflected in the High attack complexity. The vulnerability affects the Windows kernel networking component tdx.sys and can result in escalation from a low-privileged local context to SYSTEM.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows a local authorized attacker with low privileges to elevate to SYSTEM privileges. Because the resulting security context is SYSTEM, the practical impact includes full compromise of the affected host, including the ability to access sensitive data, modify system state, install or execute arbitrary code in a highly privileged context, disable protections, and disrupt system availability. Supporting CVSS metrics indicate high impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

No specific vendor mitigation beyond patching is provided in the supplied content. In the absence of a patch, reduce exposure by limiting local access to trusted users only, minimizing the presence of low-privileged accounts on affected systems, enforcing least privilege, and monitoring for suspicious local privilege-escalation activity. Because exploitation is local and requires an authorized attacker, hardening post-compromise pathways and restricting interactive/logon access can reduce risk, but these measures do not remediate the underlying flaw.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply Microsoft's official security update for CVE-2026-27908. Microsoft lists an official fix as available as part of the April 2026 Patch Tuesday security updates. Standard remediation is to deploy the relevant Windows security update to affected systems and verify that the patched version of tdx.sys is installed.
