Stack-based buffer overflow in Dell PowerProtect Data Domain DD OS

IdentifiersCVE-2026-26951CWE-121· Stack-based Buffer Overflow

CVE-2026-26951 is a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in Dell PowerProtect Data Domain products running Data Domain Operating System (DD OS), including Dell PowerProtect Data Domain appliances, Data Domain Virtual Edition, and Dell APEX Protection Storage. The provided content states that affected versions include DD OS feature releases 7.7.1.0 through 8.6, LTS2025 releases 8.3.1.0 through 8.3.1.20, and LTS2024 releases 7.13.1.0 through 7.13.1.60. A high-privileged attacker with local access can exploit the flaw to trigger memory corruption on the stack and achieve arbitrary command execution with root privileges.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation can result in arbitrary command execution as root on the affected Data Domain system. This gives the attacker full control over the appliance or virtual instance, enabling compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of protected backup and storage data, as well as potential destruction or manipulation of backup infrastructure.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, limit local access to trusted administrators only, minimize the number of high-privilege accounts, restrict shell or console access, and monitor for suspicious privileged activity on affected systems. Because exploitation requires local access and high privileges, hardening administrative access paths and reducing privileged exposure can lower risk until upgrades are applied.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade affected Dell DD OS installations to a remediated release. The provided content states fixes are available in DD OS 8.6.1.10 and 8.7.0.0 or later for the main feature-release track, 8.3.1.30 or later for LTS2025, and 7.13.1.70 or later for LTS2024. For PowerProtect DP Series Appliance deployments, Dell states issues are remediated in version 2.7.9 with DD OS 8.3.1.30.
