Out-of-bounds read information disclosure in Apple Model I/O USD library

IdentifiersCVE-2026-28941CWE-125

CVE-2026-28941 is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability affecting Apple Model I/O / USD parsing on iOS 18.7.9, iPadOS 18.7.9, macOS Sequoia 15.7.7, and macOS Tahoe 26.5. Apple states that processing a maliciously crafted file may lead to a denial-of-service or potentially disclose memory contents, and that the issue was addressed with improved checks. Supporting reporting from ZDI indicates the specific flaw exists within the USD library and is caused by insufficient validation of user-supplied data, allowing a read past the end of an allocated buffer while parsing attacker-controlled file content.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation may cause the target application or process to terminate unexpectedly, resulting in denial of service, and may also disclose memory contents from the affected process. This can expose sensitive information resident in memory. ZDI further notes the bug could potentially be combined with other vulnerabilities to aid code execution in the current process context, but the direct documented impact for this CVE is information disclosure and denial of service.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until patches are applied, reduce exposure by avoiding opening or importing untrusted Model I/O / USD-related files from untrusted sources, limiting automatic processing of externally supplied 3D asset files, and restricting workflows or applications that parse attacker-controlled USD content. General hardening such as least-privilege execution and sandboxing of file-processing workflows may reduce impact, but no vendor-specific workaround beyond updating is provided in the supplied content.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply the vendor fixes released by Apple. The issue is fixed in iOS 18.7.9, iPadOS 18.7.9, macOS Sequoia 15.7.7, and macOS Tahoe 26.5. Apple indicates the vulnerability was remediated through improved checks in the affected parsing logic.
