Out-of-bounds write in Apple Model I/O/USD image parsing

IdentifiersCVE-2026-28940CWE-787

CVE-2026-28940 is a memory corruption vulnerability in Apple’s Model I/O component, with reporting that ties the flaw to the USD library on macOS. Apple describes the issue as: processing a maliciously crafted image may corrupt process memory, and states it was addressed with improved memory handling. Additional reporting from ZDI characterizes the bug as an out-of-bounds write caused by improper validation of user-supplied data, resulting in a write past the end of an allocated buffer during parsing of attacker-controlled image/USD-related content. Affected Apple platforms include iOS 18.7.9 and iPadOS 18.7.9, iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5, macOS Sequoia 15.7.7, macOS Tahoe 26.5, tvOS 26.5, and visionOS 26.5 prior to the fixes.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation can corrupt process memory and may lead to unexpected application termination. Based on the ZDI advisory, the flaw can also permit arbitrary code execution in the context of the current process on affected macOS installations. Impact therefore ranges from denial of service to code execution, depending on target application behavior and exploit reliability.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until patches are applied, reduce exposure by avoiding processing untrusted or externally supplied image/USD content in applications using Model I/O/USD parsing paths, especially on macOS. Limit automatic preview/rendering of untrusted files where operationally feasible. No vendor-specific workaround beyond updating is provided in the supplied content.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply Apple’s fixes in iOS 18.7.9 and iPadOS 18.7.9, iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5, macOS Sequoia 15.7.7, macOS Tahoe 26.5, tvOS 26.5, and visionOS 26.5, or later versions. Apple states the issue was resolved through improved memory handling.
