LDAP Injection in Apache CXF XKMS LDAP Certificate Repository

IdentifiersCVE-2026-44930CWE-90· Improper Neutralization of Special…

CVE-2026-44930 is an LDAP injection vulnerability in the LDAP Certificate repository used by the XKMS server component of Apache CXF, specifically the org.apache.cxf.services.xkms:cxf-services-xkms-x509-repo-ldap artifact. The issue is caused by insufficient sanitization or validation of user-supplied input incorporated into LDAP queries or search filters during certificate lookup operations. By manipulating LDAP search parameters sent to a vulnerable XKMS endpoint, an attacker can influence backend directory queries and cause the repository to return certificates outside the intended scope. Reported affected versions include Apache CXF 4.2.0 before 4.2.1, 4.0.0 through 4.1.5, and versions before 3.6.11.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows unauthorized retrieval of arbitrary digital certificates from the LDAP-backed certificate repository. Although the available information does not indicate direct remote code execution, exposure of certificates can undermine trust infrastructure by enabling certificate enumeration, unauthorized access to certificates belonging to other users or services, and follow-on abuse such as impersonation, interception of encrypted communications where the retrieved material is operationally useful, or support for lateral movement and further targeting within enterprise environments.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, restrict exposure of XKMS services to trusted clients and networks, review and tighten LDAP access controls for the certificate repository, and monitor certificate access and directory query logs for anomalous lookup patterns or bulk retrieval activity. Limiting who can reach vulnerable XKMS endpoints reduces the opportunity to inject crafted LDAP filters until patched versions can be deployed.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Apache CXF to a fixed release. The provided advisories state that the vulnerability is addressed in Apache CXF 4.2.1, 4.1.6, and 3.6.11. Organizations should update affected deployments of the XKMS LDAP certificate repository component to one of these patched versions according to their supported branch.
