Linux kernel RDMA/iwcm workqueue list corruption

CVE-2026-45898 is a Linux kernel vulnerability in the RDMA/iwcm subsystem. The flaw was introduced by commit e1168f0 ("RDMA/iwcm: Simplify cm_event_handler()"), which changed the logic to unconditionally call queue_work() under the assumption that queue_work() would be a no-op for already pending work. In this code path, however, RDMA/iwcm used a free list of struct iwcm_work objects with an embedded struct work_struct, so reused work items could be queued multiple times as distinct workqueue entries. The handler then walked a separate work_list until empty, allowing an item to be processed and returned to the free list while its corresponding workqueue entry was still queued. If that object was then reused and reinitialized with INIT_WORK, the stale queued entry could corrupt internal workqueue lists, resulting in list_del corruption and a kernel BUG. The upstream fix removes the redundant work_list and relies on the kernel workqueue subsystem's own tracking.

Successful triggering of the flaw can corrupt kernel workqueue linked-list state, causing kernel BUGs, crashes, and denial of service. Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, reduce exposure by disabling or avoiding use of the affected RDMA/iwcm path where feasible, particularly iWARP deployments using the vulnerable subsystem. Limit access to RDMA-capable interfaces and avoid stress or untrusted workloads exercising iw_cm until patched. These are temporary risk-reduction measures only; the definitive mitigation is installation of a fixed kernel.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Update to a Linux kernel release that includes the upstream RDMA/iwcm fix removing work_list for CVE-2026-45898. Vendor-fixed package versions cited in the provided material include, for example, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP7 kernel-default 6.4.0-150700.53.60.1 or later, and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 16.0 / SUSE Linux Micro 6.2 / openSUSE Leap 16.0 kernel-default 6.12.0-160000.35.1 or later. Apply the relevant vendor kernel update for the affected distribution and reboot into the patched kernel.
