Axios Node.js HTTP adapter Proxy-Authorization header leak on redirect

IdentifiersCVE-2026-44487CWE-201· Insertion of Sensitive Information…

CVE-2026-44487 is an information disclosure vulnerability in Axios affecting the Node.js HTTP adapter prior to versions 0.32.0 and 1.16.0. In affected versions, when Axios sends an initial request through an authenticated HTTP proxy and automatically follows redirects, a specific proxy-to-direct redirect flow can cause the Proxy-Authorization header to be forwarded to the redirected origin even though the follow-on request is no longer sent through the proxy. As a result, proxy credentials intended only for the outbound proxy may be disclosed to the final destination server. The issue affects Node.js usage of Axios rather than browser usage.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

The primary impact is disclosure of authenticated HTTP proxy credentials to an unintended remote origin. If the destination is attacker-controlled or otherwise untrusted, it can capture the leaked Proxy-Authorization header. Where those credentials are reusable and the proxy is reachable to the attacker, this may enable unauthorized use of the proxy and access consistent with the credential’s scope and the proxy’s authorization policy. The described impact is confidentiality-focused; no direct integrity or availability impact is indicated in the provided content.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, disable automatic redirect following by setting maxRedirects to 0 and handle redirects manually, ensuring Proxy-Authorization is not propagated to requests that are no longer sent via the proxy. Avoid using reusable authenticated HTTP proxy credentials when requesting untrusted origins. If credential exposure is suspected, rotate the affected proxy credentials.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Axios to a fixed release: 1.16.0 or later on the 1.x branch, or 0.32.0 or later on the 0.x branch backport line.
