RCE in Microsoft Outlook and Word via Word rendering engine

IdentifiersCVE-2026-45458CWE-416· Use After Free

CVE-2026-45458 is a critical remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft Office affecting Microsoft Outlook Classic and Microsoft Word. Although some descriptions label the issue as type confusion, the supporting content more specifically characterizes CVE-2026-45458 as a use-after-free flaw in the Office document parsing and Word rendering pipeline. The vulnerability arises when the Word engine dereferences a dangling pointer after previously freed memory is reallocated with attacker-controlled data, resulting in memory corruption. Because Outlook Classic uses the Word rendering engine to process email content, including Preview Pane rendering, a specially crafted email body or attachment can trigger the flaw when rendered by Outlook or opened in Word. Microsoft classifies the issue as allowing an unauthorized attacker to execute code locally, but the exploit chain can be initiated remotely through delivery of malicious content over email and then triggered locally when Office processes that content.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation can result in arbitrary code execution in the security context of the victim user. In practical terms, an attacker can deliver crafted Office content by email and obtain code execution when Outlook Classic renders the message or when the malicious document is processed by Word. This can enable installation of malware, theft or modification of user-accessible data, and use of the compromised host as a foothold for additional privilege escalation or lateral movement.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Primary mitigation is patching, as this is a core engine-level memory-safety flaw. Until updates are fully deployed, reduce exposure by disabling or limiting the Outlook Classic Preview Pane for untrusted mailboxes, restricting exposure to untrusted email content and attachments, and enforcing Protected View for files originating from the internet. Attack Surface Reduction rules that prevent Office applications from spawning child processes can reduce post-exploitation utility. Defenders should also monitor for rendering crashes, memory-access violations, and suspicious child processes spawned by Word or Outlook.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply Microsoft's June 2026 security updates for all affected Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Word product lines and builds. Microsoft specifically advises administrators to install all applicable update packages for each deployed Office SKU because multiple Office product lines may require separate security packages. Environments using Microsoft Office LTSC 2024 and other supported Word/Outlook builds that share the vulnerable rendering components should be updated promptly. For Office LTSC for Mac 2021, Office LTSC for Mac 2024, and Microsoft 365 for Mac, deploy the corresponding fixes as soon as Microsoft makes those channel-specific updates available.
