Sandbox Escape Race Condition in Google Chrome Safe Browsing on Mac

IdentifiersCVE-2026-12454CWE-362

CVE-2026-12454 is a high-severity race condition in the Safe Browsing component of Google Chrome on macOS prior to version 149.0.7827.155. According to the provided advisory content, a remote attacker who had already compromised the renderer process could exploit the flaw via a crafted HTML page to potentially escape Chrome's sandbox. The vulnerable condition is described only at the component level as a race in Safe Browsing; no specific function or code path is provided in the available material.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to break out of the renderer sandbox on affected Chrome for Mac systems. In practical terms, this would let an attacker who already achieved renderer-process compromise elevate the impact of that foothold beyond the normal browser sandbox boundary, enabling further access to the host context subject to the privileges of the browser process and facilitating exploit chaining.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

No specific temporary workaround is provided in the supplied advisories. If immediate patching is not possible, reduce exposure by limiting use of untrusted websites, enforcing browser isolation or other defense-in-depth controls, and monitoring for outdated Chrome/Chromium/Edge versions. These measures do not remove the underlying flaw and are only partial risk reduction until the fixed version is deployed.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Google Chrome on macOS to version 149.0.7827.155 or later. For Chromium downstreams, apply the corresponding fixed Chromium release. Microsoft Edge users should upgrade to version 149.0.4022.80 or later, which incorporates the Chromium fix. Debian Chromium users should install the vendor-fixed packages referenced in the advisory stream.
