Sandbox escape race condition in Google Chrome Updater on macOS

IdentifiersCVE-2026-12468CWE-362

CVE-2026-12468 is a high-severity race condition vulnerability in the Updater component of Google Chrome on macOS prior to version 149.0.7827.155. According to the provided advisory content, a remote attacker who had already compromised the renderer process could leverage the flaw via a crafted HTML page to potentially escape Chrome’s sandbox. The issue is described by Google as an inappropriate implementation in Updater, with the primary exploitation characteristic being a race in that component on Mac systems.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation could allow an attacker who already achieved renderer-process compromise to escape the browser sandbox on affected macOS systems. This would let the attacker execute actions outside the renderer’s sandbox restrictions and could enable further compromise of the browser or host environment as part of an exploit chain.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

No specific workaround or temporary mitigation is provided in the supplied advisories beyond updating. Practical risk reduction prior to patching would require limiting exposure to malicious web content and reducing the likelihood of renderer compromise, but the provided sources do not document an official mitigation other than upgrading.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Google Chrome on macOS to version 149.0.7827.155 or later. For Chromium-based Microsoft Edge, upgrade to version 149.0.4022.80 or later, which incorporates the Chromium fix. Debian users should install the fixed chromium packages identified in the advisory stream where applicable.
