Sandbox escape in Google Chrome Metrics

IdentifiersCVE-2026-12465CWE-20

CVE-2026-12465 is a high-severity object lifecycle / insufficient validation of untrusted input vulnerability in the Metrics component of Google Chrome prior to 149.0.7827.155. According to the provided advisory content, a remote attacker who had already compromised the renderer process could leverage a crafted HTML page to potentially escape Chrome's sandbox. The issue is described as affecting object lifecycle handling in Metrics, with related vendor wording also characterizing it as insufficient validation of untrusted input.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation could allow an attacker who already achieved renderer-process compromise to break out of the browser sandbox. This would let the attacker execute actions outside the intended renderer isolation boundary, materially increasing post-exploitation capability and enabling further compromise of the host or browser context.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

No specific workaround is provided in the supplied advisories beyond applying the vendor updates. As temporary risk reduction, reduce exposure to malicious web content and untrusted sites, and apply standard browser hardening and exploit-chain disruption controls, but patching is the primary mitigation.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Google Chrome to version 149.0.7827.155 or later. For Chromium on Debian, upgrade to 149.0.7827.155-1~deb13u1 on Debian stable (trixie) or 149.0.7827.155-1~deb12u1 on Debian oldstable (bookworm). For Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based), upgrade to version 149.0.4022.80 or later, which incorporates the upstream Chromium fix.
