Remote Code Execution in Cisco ISE and ISE-PIC

IdentifiersCVE-2026-20181CWE-20

CVE-2026-20181 is a critical authenticated remote code execution vulnerability affecting Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) and Cisco ISE Passive Identity Connector (ISE-PIC). The flaw is caused by insufficient validation of user-supplied input in HTTP request handling. An attacker with valid administrative credentials can send a crafted HTTP request to an affected device to execute arbitrary commands on the underlying operating system. Successful exploitation can yield user-level access to the host OS and may then allow privilege escalation to root. In single-node deployments, exploitation can also cause the affected ISE node to become unavailable.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows an authenticated remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the underlying operating system of the affected Cisco ISE or ISE-PIC device. The attacker can obtain user-level OS access and then elevate privileges to root, resulting in full compromise of the appliance. In single-node deployments, exploitation may also render the node unavailable, causing a denial-of-service condition in which endpoints that have not already authenticated cannot access the network until the node is restored.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

No workaround is available according to the provided content. The only effective mitigation described is to apply Cisco's fixed software updates. Until patching is completed, Cisco recommends restricting administrative access to reduce exposure.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Cisco has released software updates to remediate this vulnerability. The provided content indicates customers should upgrade Cisco ISE/ISE-PIC to fixed releases, specifically ISE 3.3 Patch 11, 3.4 Patch 6, or 3.5 Patch 3, as applicable. Cisco also recommends validating system integrity after patching and updating affected systems immediately.
