Denial of Service in undici WebSocket client via unbounded continuation frame fragmentation

IdentifiersCVE-2026-12151CWE-770

CVE-2026-12151 affects the undici WebSocket client implementation, including applications using new WebSocket(...) and the WebSocketStream API. In affected releases starting at undici 6.17.0, the client enforces maxPayloadSize against the cumulative byte count of fragments in a WebSocket message, but does not enforce a limit on the number of fragments. A malicious or compromised WebSocket server can therefore send a very large number of small or empty continuation frames that individually satisfy per-frame checks and do not violate cumulative payload-size validation, while still causing the client to retain state and consume memory without bound during message reassembly. This leads to unbounded memory growth in the client process and results in denial of service.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows a malicious WebSocket endpoint to drive unbounded memory consumption in the client process. The practical impact is memory exhaustion, process instability or termination, and denial of service for the affected application. The issue is client-side and is triggered when an affected application connects to an attacker-controlled or compromised WebSocket server.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

No workaround is available according to the provided advisory content. Until patched, exposure can only be reduced operationally by preventing affected applications from connecting to untrusted, attacker-controlled, or potentially compromised WebSocket endpoints, but this does not replace upgrading to a fixed release.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade undici to a fixed version. The provided content states that affected releases begin at 6.17.0 and that patched versions are available in undici >= 6.26.0, >= 7.28.0, or >= 8.5.0; the advisory entry specifically lists fixed releases as 6.27.0, 7.28.0, or 8.5.0. Based on the supplied data, upgrade to a vendor-fixed release in one of those supported branches, preferably the latest available patched version for the deployed major line.
