Authorization bypass for Restricted components during Apache NiFi Process Group replacement

IdentifiersCVE-2026-44914CWE-862

CVE-2026-44914 affects Apache NiFi versions 1.12.0 through 2.9.0. The vulnerability is caused by missing authorization checks when handling requests to replace Process Groups that include extension components whose use is governed by NiFi’s Restricted annotation. Although the Restricted annotation is intended to require additional privileges for certain components, the framework did not verify restricted-status authorization during Process Group replacement operations. As a result, a user with general write access could introduce Restricted components through the replace Process Group workflow without the intended additional authorization enforcement.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

In affected Apache NiFi deployments that implement separate authorization controls for Restricted components, the flaw allows a user who already has general write access to bypass the additional Restricted-component permission model. This can result in unauthorized addition of privileged or sensitive extension components to a flow, weakening administrative security boundaries and potentially enabling misuse of components that are supposed to require elevated authorization.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate upgrade is not possible, limit Process Group replacement capability to highly trusted users and review whether users with general write access can import or replace Process Groups containing Restricted components. Monitor and audit flow changes for unauthorized introduction of Restricted extensions. Note that deployments that do not implement separate authorization for Restricted components are stated not to be subject to this vulnerability, because write permission is already the effective security boundary.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Apache NiFi to version 2.9.0 as recommended by the advisory. The project states that version 2.9.0 removes the implementation of Restricted status authorization from the framework, addressing the vulnerable authorization behavior during Process Group replacement.
