Grafana Snowflake datasource GET/PUT arbitrary file read/write

IdentifiersCVE-2026-28381CWE-73

CVE-2026-28381 is a critical vulnerability in the Grafana Snowflake datasource. The datasource permits Snowflake GET and PUT commands, and any user who can run queries against that datasource can use those commands to transfer files between the local Grafana server and the connected Snowflake host. This behavior exposes the Grafana server filesystem to unintended read and write operations through datasource query functionality. Based on the provided context, the issue can enable local file read/write and create a path to potential privilege escalation.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows an authenticated user with query access to the Snowflake datasource to read files from, or write files to, the local Grafana server and the connected Snowflake host. This can result in unauthorized access to sensitive data, tampering with files, and potentially availability impact if critical files are modified. The provided context also indicates a path to potential privilege escalation, making the overall impact high across confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Restrict file access associated with Snowflake datasource GET/PUT commands, disable unnecessary file-transfer capability in the Snowflake datasource, and tightly limit datasource query permissions to trusted users only. Until a patch is applied, reduce exposure by preventing untrusted or low-privilege users from issuing queries through the affected datasource and monitoring for suspicious GET/PUT usage.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply the vendor-provided Grafana security patch or updated version that addresses CVE-2026-28381 as soon as available. In addition, review the Snowflake datasource configuration and remove or restrict support for GET/PUT file-transfer functionality where not required. Limit which users are permitted to run queries against the datasource.
