CVE-2005-1513 is an integer overflow in qmail's stralloc_readyplus function on 64-bit platforms with large virtual memory availability. During processing of a very large SMTP message, specifically a nearly 4 GB header line that is later handled by qmail-local via getln(), the size calculation in GEN_ALLOC_readyplus() can wrap, causing alloc_re() to reallocate a buffer to a size smaller than required. Subsequent copying then produces a large heap-based buffer overflow. Qualys reported that this condition is reachable remotely in default Debian qmail deployments because qmail-local, unlike qmail-smtpd, is not memory-limited by default. Their analysis showed the overflow can be turned into controlled memory corruption and ultimately arbitrary command execution by corrupting heap metadata and redirecting a later open() call to system().
