Privilege Escalation in WatchGuard Firebox and XTM Management Interface

IdentifiersCVE-2022-23176CWE-269

A vulnerability in WatchGuard Firebox and XTM appliances allows a remote attacker with unprivileged credentials to escalate privileges and access the system with a privileged management session. The flaw exists in the management interface of Fireware OS versions before 12.7.2_U1, 12.x before 12.1.3_U3, and 12.2.x through 12.5.x before 12.5.7_U3, where insufficient access control permits privilege escalation via exposed management access.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows an attacker with valid but unprivileged credentials to gain privileged management access to the affected appliance, potentially leading to full administrative control, configuration changes, or further compromise of the network environment.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Restrict management interface access to trusted networks only, disable remote management if not required, and monitor for unauthorized login attempts. Apply the vendor-provided patches as soon as possible.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Fireware OS to version 12.7.2_U1 or later, 12.1.3_U3 or later, or 12.5.7_U3 or later, depending on the affected branch. WatchGuard has released patches addressing this vulnerability in the specified versions.
